The proposed take over of the dilapidated National Stadium, Lagos by the Lagos State Government has been received with mixed reactions from business owners and occupants operating at the stadium.
Governor Akinwunmi Ambode had expressed intent to give the stadium a face lift when he paid a condolence visit to the Minister of Youth and Sports, Solomon Dalung at his residence in Abuja last weekend.
“I will like to bring the National stadium to life. The last time a game was played at the National Stadium was in 2005. If this project pulls through, it will bring about the employment aspect of football and hosting of matches at the stadium. We want to bring back the football culture of Lagos state to the National Stadium after its renovation” he said.
The stadium had continued to deleriolate after the last football game that drew a large crowd which was the LG Cup match between Nigeria and Senegal was played in the main bowl in April 2005.
Most stadia in the country had been up for concession, following Federal Government’s inability to fund the renovations.
However, while the news of the takeover came as a welcomed development to many, the business owners at the Stadium have been gripped with fear as the take over may see them being given quit notice.
