From: Rose Ejembi, Makurdi.

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has directed security operatives to arrest anyone seen with an illegal weapon be he a farmer or herdsman for prosecution.

He also appealed to residents to always exercise restrain in the face of provocation.

The Governor who gave the directive while presiding over a meeting of the state executives council and sole administrators held, on Thursday, at the Benue Peoples House also directed local government Sole Administrators who were yet to inaugurate security committees at ward and kindred levels to do so immediately.

In a statement signed by his Special Adviser (Media and ICT), Tahav Agezua, Governor Ortom stated that the meeting became necessary to take proactive security measures following massive influx of Fulani herdsmen into the state.

He explained further that the committees which must comprise all the relevant stakeholders including farmers, herders, the vigilante and Joint Civilian Task Force, as well as traditional rulers were imperative for monitoring and tackling security challenges at those levels.

The Governor also enjoined both the Fulani herders and the Benue farmers to report a breach of their rights to the relevant authorities rather than resorting to self-help by taking the law into their hands assuring that security agencies have been mobilized to respond swiftly to such reports.

He particularly appealed to the youths not to take precipitate action which he said would have severe consequences on their communities but to work with the committees to promote peace in their areas.

During the meeting the administrators interacted with security chiefs on the challenges in their respective local government areas and received tips on how to tackle them.
