Veteran Nigerian striker Obafemi Martins scored his first goal of the season as Shanghai Shenhua cut the gap on leaders, Guangzhou R&F F.C. to six points with a 2-0 away win over Guizhou Hengfeng.
Martins, 32, headed in Jiajun Bai’s cross to score in the 37th minute of a tight contest with little goal mouth action.
It was his first goal in seven months following his move from Seattle Sounders in the MLS, and moves Shenhua up to sixth in the Chinese Super League with 10 points from six games.
Next up for Gus Poyet’s men is a home tie against fourth-placed Shandong Luneng on April 29.
Elsewhere in the Chinese League, Martins’compatriot, Brown Ideye finally ended his goal drought as he found the back of the net in Tianjin TEDA’s 3-1 victory over Yanbian Fude on Saturday.
The Super Eagles striker has been on a dreadful run in front of goal since joining the Tigers from Olympiacos, but was well positioned to score from a rebound after Mbaye Diagne’s initial effort was saved by Wenyi Chi.
It was yet another vital victory for Jaime Pacheco’s men who are beginning to find their feet after wobbling at the start of the campaign.
Tianjin currently lie tenth on the log with 10 points from eight games and they visit Qinhuangdao Olympic Sports Center Stadium on April 29 for their fixture against Hebei CFFC.
