CAN Backs Gov Akinwunmi Ambode Over Sacking of Lagos Chaplain

The Governor of Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has received the backing of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Lagos State Chapter over the sack of the Presiding Chaplain, Chapel of Christ the Light, Venerable Femi Taiwo by the state government.

According to the umbrella Christian body, the decision of the state government to relieve Venerable Taiwo of his duties and toss him out on the street was in order, PM News writes.

There was outrage last week when it emerged that the senior Pastor of the Lagos State Chaplaincy had been sacked for allegedly ‘disrespecting’ the wife of the governor, Bolanle Ambode.

The state government had debunked the claim, stating he was actually fired for overreaching the bounds of his office and wanting to be the “alpha and amega” on spiritual matters to the state governor and his family.

And in a news conference at the Chapel Tuesday, CAN Chairman, Lagos State, Apostle Alexander Bamgbola lamented that the matter had been over-flogged in the media, saying that the government had the power to ‘hire and fire’.

According to the cleric, the church was built by the Lagos State Government for itself and for the public and the state government consequently appointed two chaplains to run the affairs of the church, hence it reserved the right to decide who runs it.

CAN’s verdict may not sit down well with members of the church who have since staged a boycott over the pastor’s sack.

More details as the drama unfolds.
