Arsene Wenger has agreed to sign a new two-year contract that will keep him as the manager of Arsenal until 2018/19.
According to BBC Sport, Wenger and club owner Stan Kroenke met on Monday to determine the Frenchman’s future, with the decision relayed to directors at a Tuesday board meeting despite a boardroom split.
It is understood that a formal announcement will be made on Wednesday, with the structure of the club set to remain the same ahead of the 2017-18 campaign.
Following the new deal, the 67-year-old Frenchman is set to extend his 21-year reign at the north London club that’s been on lean times over the past seasons.
This comes after a tumultuous campaign that saw a section of Arsenal fans take to the streets of London in protests against Wenger’s continued stay at the club with the hashtag #WengerOut.
Former players – many of them Wenger’s protégés – appeared to take sides with dissenting voices at the club with the likes of Ian Wright at one point slamming Wenger for running an “incompetent regime” .
The Gunners finished fifth in the Premier League this season, the first time they have failed to secure qualification for the Champions League under the guidance of the Frenchman.
They however beat Premier League champions Chelsea 2-1 to win the FA Cup at Wembley on Saturday.
Though some fans are placated by the Cup success, there is still concern over how playing in the Europa League could affect the club going forward, particularly with star players Mesut Ozil and Alexis Sanchez yet to pen new deals.
Fans on Twitter are already reacting to the news, brilliantly as always…
