Eric Benét Responds After Jay Z Name-Drops Him in ‘4:44’

Eric Benét is yet to catch a break after Jay Z name-dropped the singer in his 13th studio album ‘4:44’ which is currently sweeping social media in a storm.

In case you missed it – Jay Z dropped the album midnight June 30 exclusively on his music streaming company, Tidal, which he sold to Sprint months ago. The album can be streamed by Tidal and Sprint customers who subscribed to the platforms before June 26.

So, in the 10-song album which has been described as Jay’s most-personal and political album, he addressed controversies ranging from the famous MET Ball drama where Solange attacked him, to the cheating allegations his wife Beyonce raised in her album Lemonade.

Jay Z also had some words for Kanye West, took shots at folks who thought his Tidal would flop, and also took jabs at upcoming rappers who have a penchant for posing with dollar bills on social media.

The most-talked about part of the album is from the song 4:44 where he addressed the cheating scandal. Here’s what Jay said:

“You almost went Eric Benét, let the baddest girl in the world get away / I don’t even know what else to say, (expletive) never go Eric Benét.”

The lyrics caught the attention of the named singer who famously cheated on his wife Halle Berry in the ’90s, and Benét quickly shot back at Jay Z on Twitter. Here’s what he said:

But folks are yet to let Benét rest. The line form the song has been made into a catchphrase. Folks are trolling the singer, with many reminding him of how he treated Halle Berry unfairly back then.

Now, Benét has granted USA Today exclusive interview, opening up on how much the song has affected his life in the last few hours.

Here’s what he said:

“All of a sudden I start getting texts from homies and whoever, and then the Twitter thing happened, and it’s quite an interesting process,” he said. “But it’s all love…everything he makes is always fire, and once again he did not disappoint. It’s kind of unreal being mentioned in his lyrics, but like I said, it’s all love.”

Benét also admitted his admiration for 4:44, saying:

“I listened to the lyrics of the track — and first off, the track is dope. He’s talking about some deep stuff on the song, how he needs to be a better man for Blue and he went through it…and personally, I’m just happy to see that he and Beyoncé made it through on the other side, and everything is dope.”

“So from my perspective, I think that everything that happens in your past, most of it leads to where you are today. And I love my life as it is, my babies and my wife, so life and God is good.”
