Assistant Secretary, National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) Plateau State Chapter, Mr. Reuben Sarki , has appealed to the state government to pay local council workers the full national minimum wage.
Sarki said this, on Tuesday, in Jos, that local government workers were being paid 15 per cent of the 18,000 minimum wage .
He explained that NULGE had been agitating for the implementation of the wage since three years ago.
Sarki said though some other states in the country were asking for increase in the wage due to the economic down turn, NULGE was still asking for the full wage.
“Some NULGE staff collect as low as N8,000 to N10,000 as their monthly salaries, which is completely unfair and unacceptable,” he said.
He explained that the welfare of workers should be prioritised, saying that with so much bills for electricity, high fuel price, school fees, hospital bills and other utilities, 15 per cent of 18,000 amounted to slavery.
Sarki further called on the administration review the decision, to improve the living conditions of workers in the State. (NAN)
