Amope; The Review!!! | MUST WATCH/READ!

The movie accentuates the vast enmity that could ensue between two equally great people when they are tied to a particular subject of choice.

It further shows the futility that arises from not truly focusing on what matters in the face of adversity (Many people lose out in life when they put more focus on the other competitors than the actual prize). The dialogue used in the movie is intriguing with very authentic choice of sentences that are only heard in top notch Nollywood movies.
The setting is supposedly based in the 90s with original vintage props. For a short movie with probably low budget, this is very commendable!
However, an ode to futility seems like a somewhat deep title for a movie that runs for only about 8 minutes. I think the short duration of the movie didn’t really do full justice to the story behind that title. But maybe there would be sequels? Maybe, maybe not. In total, I believe it is a well packaged production that’s worth seeing.

About a week ago, “Amope” was recommended to me by a colleague who recognizes my interest in the intricacies of filmmaking in the Nigerian market. I finally got around to watching it a few days ago and can assertively say it was a breath of fresh air, even more so when it is placed on a scale with the content that is consistently put out by the Nigerian movie industry.
Summarily, “Amope” is a short film that satirically portrays the futility of the efforts of two young Nigerian men at winning the attentions of the heroine of the play, a young lady named Amope.
As mentioned earlier, the plot centres around two young men (one, a seemingly well educated England returnee and the other, a comparatively local lad with imagination far outweighing his exposure) and the heroine, Amope. The idea of using a very relatable situation of two men ‘fighting’ over a woman to demonstrate the satire contained in the film is a brilliant one and you may find yourself smiling at the efforts of each man at winning the favors of the lady with his prospects. All these lead up to an interesting and slightly unexpected plot twist at the tail end of the dialogue. (Sorry, no spoilers here).
Apart from the impressive role interpretation of the actors, another thing that is instantly obvious from the first scene is the professionalism of the cinematographer and the careful attention to detail. The plot of the film is centred around the mid-1950s and the costumer did a great job in dressing up the actors in a manner reminiscent of how people were dressed during the stated period.
The colors used, the tone and even the choice of music combined to create the effect that is expected from a 1950s setting. Nothing seems out of place and the filmmaking crew must take credit for this.
If you’re looking for something a little different from the recycled content that has become the norm, or maybe you just need a new favorite movie studio to follow, watching Amope will be a good place to start. You can’t go wrong with this.
*Rating* – 8/10
