The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission( EFCC) on Wednesday described a statement made by Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu about a planned raid of his residence as nothing but falsehood.
Ekweremadu was reported to have raised the alarm that the anti-graft agency planned to stage a search of his apartment just to plant monies. Rivers state governor, Mr Nyesom Wike recently made a similar claim against the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
In reaction to Ekweremadu, the EFCC said the statement was a false alarm which smacked of “a scripted propaganda to distract the commission by putting it on the defensive.
Stressing that the tactic of planting evidence was strange to the Commission, EFCC spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren said the supposed raid existed only in the infantile imagination of persons associated with Ekweremadu.
Uwujaren assured the deputy senate president that he had nothing to fear if his cupboard was clean.
“The commission wishes to state in very strong terms that it is not aware of any plot to set up Ekweremadu for any arrest.
“If any agency is plotting to plant monies and guns in Ekweremadu’s residence, it is certainly not the EFCC as such antics are alien to the commission,” the spokesman said.
The Nation reports that Uwujaren also stressed that no amount of scare-mongering could stop the agency from carrying out its mandate of ridding Nigeria of corruption.
