Osinbajo Wades Into Fulani Herdsmen Attacks, Meets Benue Governor, NSA

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo met with Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue state and theNSA, Major-General Babagana Monguno, over the menace of herdsmen attacks in Benue state.

The trio held a closed-door meeting which lasted for over an hour on the issue at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday, May 16.

Governor Ortom, who spoke to State House correspondents after the meeting, said he was at the Presidential Villa to brief the acting president on the prevailing security situation in Benue state.

According to the governor, concerted efforts by his government had brought the crisis between herdsmen and farmers in the state to a level where, according to him, both parties in the dispute are beginning to understand each other.

The governor stated that his government was on the verge of signing into law an anti-open grazing bill that would also assist in addressing the challenge of clashes between farmers and herdsmen in the state.

The meeting was held barely two weeks after Ortom said that 12 of the state’s 23 local government areas are still being held captive by Fulani herdsmen.

The governor made the revelation when he received the president of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Reverend Samson Ayokunle.

Meanwhile, the Department of Secret Services (DSS) has accused former governor of Benue state, Gabriel Suswam of being behind the killings and unrest in Benue.

The DSS also linked Suswam to alleged notorious terrorist, Terwase Akwaza, who is wanted by authorities for allegedly being behind several killings in the state.
