Alleged N630m rent diversion: Saraki rubbishes claim

Senate president, Bukola Saraki has described a report credited to a group known as Citizen Action to Take Back Nigeria (CATBAN) that the National Assembly leadership collected rent for official accommodation as false.

Saraki says the current leadership of the National Assembly would not be part of any illegal payment to anybody.

Saraki has said there was no truth to the claim by the group that that four principal officers of the National Assembly diverted N630m for official accommodation purposes.

Online medium, Sahara reporters had on Monday, reported that four principal officers of the National Assembly; including the Senate president, Bukola Saraki; his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu; House of Representatives speaker, Yakubu Dogara; and his deputy, Lasun Yusuf collected the sum of N630m for official accommodation.

But the Senate president in a statement by his special adviser on media and publicity, Yusuph Olaniyonu on Tuesday, said though the four presiding officers were legally entitled to official accommodation, they have been living in their personal residences and do not get paid by any Federal Government agency.

“There is no truth to the claim by this group. In fact, during the preparation of the budget, the Senate President and Speaker directed the FCDA to remove the 10 billion Naira voted for the construction of their official residence to save cost,” Saraki said.
