Ecobank Nigeria has enlisted the services of three fleet management companies to handle its Lagos transport services on pay-as-you-go basis.
A statement from the bank listed the partnering companies as Uber, AA Rescue and Car4U. Under the new arrangement, the bank has concessioned its pool car services and its erstwhile outsourced drivers, numbering about 300, to take possession of the cars as part of the bank’s commitment to empower the drivers. “The drivers have also been given the option of either joining the fleet management companies or utilising their newly acquired vehicles as they desire. Relevant training programmes in partnership with the National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institutions Employees (NUBIFIE) have further been organised for all the drivers to effectively support the transition of drivers to entrepreneurship,” the statement adds.
The bank explains that in line with its commitment to ensuring transparency and fairness, it has fully engaged the umbrella union of the drivers, NUBIFIE, and negotiated and agreed on the terms.
The statement added that the measure would enable the drivers become entrepreneurs. “The drivers have applauded the initiative of the bank in providing them with cars and enabling them. The initiative also allows experts in fleet management handle the bank’s transport operations while the bank focuses on core banking.”
