The National Boundary Commission says it has returned home the corpses of the Kenyan and Cameroonian United Nations officials killed at the Nigeria-Cameroon border on January 31, 2017.
Director-General of the commission, Dr. Muhammed Ahmad, disclosed this in an interview, on Thursday, in Abuja.
Ahmad said that the corpses of the officials had been deposited at the Federal Medical Centre, Yola’s mortuary.
According to him, the bodies were transferred to Abuja, on Monday, before being flown via Ethiopian Airline to Nairobi and Yaounde, where they were received by their respective governments for burial.
His words, “We have been able to successfully transfer the corpses of the foreigners who were killed at the Nigeria- Cameroon border to their home countries for proper burial.
“We flew the corpses to their homes through Ethiopian Airline on Monday and they were received by their governments.
“It is a very sad experience for the commission and we pray and hope such incidents don’t occur again.’’
The deceased were part of a five-member UN team attacked by bandits at the Nigeria-Cameroon border while placing demarcation pillars in Koncha community in Cameroon and Tipsan in Nigeria.
The director-general said that plans were ongoing to meet with UN officials in Dakar on how to avoid such problems in future. (NAN)
