The Ebonyi State government, on Tuesday, distributed relief materials worth over N30 million to Internally Displayed Persons (IDPS) from Azuoffia-Edda community in Abakaliki Local Government Area of the state, following a communal war between Ebonyi and her Cross River communities.
Handing over the materials to the displaced persons at the government house, Abakaliki, Governor David Umahi, represented by his deputy, Kelechi If we disclosed that the gesture was a demonstration of the present administration’s commitment to better the lot of Ebonyians at all times.
Igwe further admonished the people to be grateful to God for keeping them alive despite their travail in the hands of their assailants, noting that the prompt action of the state government in securing the lives of people was what led to the low of casualties in the area.
“The little we have will be given to each family to open an account. we cannot give enough that will assuage your pains; it is a symbol of identifying with you in your moment of pain. Enough is enough. Ebonyi will no longer fold its arm and watch Ebonyi people go through such dastardly act”.
The relief materials include: Foams, cartons of Ndomie, bags of rice, wrappers, mosquito treated nets including N100,000 each to the 148 families displaced following the crisis that erupted between the affected community in Ebonyi state and Ovuruokpon community in Cross River state.
Recall that the people Ovuruokpon community in Obubura council area of Cross River state were reported to have attacked Azuoffia-Edda community in Abakaliki LGA on 10th January 2016 in retaliation over an alleged beheading of a motorcyclist in Obubura by their Ebonyi counter part.
This allegation and counter allegation sparked off crisis in the area that was once known for peace and communal living.
