Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier: Cameroon coach boasts

•Says Eagles’ll fall like Pharaohs

By George Aluo

Coach of the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon, Hugo Broos has declared that the team’s AFCON 2017 victory is just the beginning of his magic wand, even as assured Cameroonian soccer fans that the Lions would continue to get result.

The Lions would in August face the Super Eagles home and away in the Russia 2018 World Cup qualification series.

Eagles go into the double header as leaders of the group with six points as against Cameroon’s two.

Broos who was still basking in the euphoria of the AFCON final victory over Egypt told the media in Libreville that what the world saw in Gabon was just the beginning of what to expect from his youthful side ahead of the commencement of the second stanza of the race to Russia.

“We have a team that is still not on the highest level. We can be better, but I think it is only the beginning,” Broos stated, adding: “What matters to me is result. I am delighted we have emerged African champions.”

On the secret behind the team’s success, the Belgian tactician said he had to work on the morale of the players who before his arrival were ill motivated.

“It’s true that when I came to Cameroon a year ago I found a group of players who were not motivated so I had to change that. They were coming not to play for the national team but because they had to, because the coach asked them to come. So I changed the group a little bit and put some young players in and we started working and doing a good job,” the Belgian said.

The Indomitable Lions came from behind to beat the Pharaohs of Egypt 2-1 Sunday night at the Stade de I’Amitie thanks to two goals from Vincent Aboubakar and Nicolas N’Koulou.

Cameroon are now the second most decorated African nation with five AFCON titles, while Egypt have seven titles which is a record.
