Russia 2018 World Cup qualifier: Cameroon vows to take 4 points off Eagles

BY JOE APU

Reigning AFCON champions, Cameroon still dream of making it to the 2018 World Cup finals in Russia despite being four points behind Nigeria on the World Cup qualifiers Group B log.

The renewed confidence of the Indomitable Lions stemmed from the fact that they conquered the rest of Africa against all odds and now hoped they can pick at least a draw against Nigeria in Uyo and a win in Limbe that would guarantee them all three points thereby taking off four points from Nigeria’s Super Eagles and be at par with Nigeria.

According to africanfootball.com, the permutation was from assistant national team coach of the Lions, Sven Vandenbroeck who believed that achieving this feat is not an impossible task.

Nigeria welcomes the new African champions to Uyo on August 28, while the return leg match would be played on September 2 in Limbe.

“We will need at least four points against Nigeria,” coach Vandenbroeck said on a radio interview Monday.

“They will be two difficult games.

“But August is still six months away and it’s a long way to go.”

The Belgian coach further revealed he watched the Eagles beat Algeria 3-1 in another World Cup qualifier in November.

“I watched Nigeria against Algeria. They are a good team, have talented players and play as a group,” he remarked.

“I believe they were disappointed not to be at the AFCON.”

Nigeria leads the qualifying group with six points after two rounds of matches, while Cameroon is on two points.

Coach Vandenbroeck said the Indomitable Lions would be lifted for the World Cup double header after their AFCON triumph in Gabon.

“Mentally, our confidence has been boosted as we are now African champions,” he said.

Cameroon are to play two friendlies against Morocco next month before they feature at the FIFA Confederations Cup in Russia in the summer.
