The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has constituted a committee headed by its Acting President to reach out to and mend fences with the Federal Government.
The group also said that it is not an extension of the ‘opposition’ party to be at logger heads with the Federal Government.
Following its President’s running battle with the Department of State Service (DSS), the National Executive Council (NEC) of NYCN, in Abuja, at the weekend, announced the appointment of Vice President (South West), Mr. Yussuf Kelani as acting president, pending when the embattled president, Mr. Ikenga Ugochinyere resolved issues with the security personnel.
The decision, which the NEC claimed was constitutional, was to forestall any leadership vacuum that might arise as a result of the prolonged absence of Ugochinyere, whose whereabouts were yet to be ascertained, for allegedly planning anti-government protest march.
NYCN Public Relations Officer, Mr. Chris Ibe, disclosed that the NEC had constituted a seven-man committee to meet with the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Mr. Babachir Lawal, Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Solomon Dalung, Director General of DSS and other critical stakeholders to re-establish the cordial relationship that hitherto existed between the Council and Government.
They also mandated the Ag. President to reach out to the Board of Trustees, stakeholders and the ministry to finalize arrangements on convoking a management meeting as part of the strategies of moving the Council forward.
The Council, while throwing its weight behind the anti-corruption campaign of government, re-emphasized that NYCN as an umbrella body of Nigeria youths is not a political organization and does not constitute an opposition to the government; rather it complements government’s efforts in governance.
