‘We Were the REAL Artists!’ Elton John Dismisses ‘MTV Generation’ of Younger Stars

Elton John is back with his sharp tongue.

The ‘Tiny Dancer’ singer who recently returned to the spotlight following a health scare in April, has really harsh words for the younger generation of artistes he calls the ‘MTV Generation.’

The British legend made this comment during a recent appearance at the ongoing Cannes Film Festival in France. “We were before the MTV generation and I’m glad we were because we were real artists,” said the eight-time Grammy winner.

He continued, “The MTV generation brought along a lot of people who were great but a lot of people who just made videos. So a lot of the artistry went out of the music.”

This terse criticism comes barely a day after Nigerian reggae icon Ras Kimono slammed the younger artists at home, saying that their music makes him angry.

“Music is supposed to be a weapon of social change. A musician is supposed to be a prophet who speaks the truth as it affects everybody in the society. But can you tell me what these young artistes are preaching about. They do nothing but sing about butt, boobs and other mundane things that do not add value to anybody.” said Ras Kimono recently.

Now, Elton John is echoing similar complaints about artistes abroad, and though he notes that some of the videos are creative, he thinks many of the younger artistes lack the genius them, the older folks, wielded during their days.

And we wonder how long before these legends quit bashing younger artists!

What do you think?
