3 renounces cultism at Ojukwu varsity, as 2, 600 matriculate

The Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University( former Anambra State University), has matriculated a total of 2,600 fresh students with 900 from Uli and 1,700 from Igbariam campuses, respectively, just as three amongst the old students renounced their membership of a cult group, the Black Axe fraternity.

Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Fidelis Okafor, urged the matriculating students and old ones alike, to shun cultism. He explained that the law of the Federal Government of Nigeria had proscribed cultism, saying membership of any cult group remained an offence punishable by law.

He told them that any cult member caught at the school would not only be expelled but would be handed over to the police for prosecution. The VC said that a powerful and dynamic security network exists in the university to monitor and apprehend cult members, adding “woe unto the student that will be discovered to be a cultist in this university.”

He affirmed that the image of the institution had greatly improved in the eyes of the public and could not, therefore, be compromised through deviant behaviours of a few student miscreants.

“The university has shown itself as centre for excellence by laurels won in recent international, national and State competitions in various fields. It has been ranked second to University of Benin, by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, as the institution that strictly complied with the Board’s guidelines in admission. In addition, we have been ranked as the 67th best university out of the 140 universities (Federal, State and Private) in the country.

“I am also pleased to inform you that this university has turned out her second batch of medical doctors trained at the university’s collage of medicine, Awka. The formal induction, by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, of the last batch of doctors was performed in October, 2016, whereas part of the second set was done on Friday, 3, Fedruary 2017. This university has, thus, become the 29th university approved for the training of medical doctors,” the VC said.

In a church service that preceded the matriculation proper, Dean of Faculty of Education, Rev. Fr. Professor Ben Ejide told the students to be wary of what he called Carry Over Virus (COV) which he adjudged to be more dangerous than any other virus. He urged the students to study hard so that they would not be victims of the virus so as to graduate on record time.

Professor Ejide advised the students to always trust in God but should at the same time work very hard to achieve the purpose for which they were admitted to the university.

“Trust in God and trust in yourself. St Augustine said if you pray, pray as if everything depends on God and while working, work as everything depends on you. Don’t let anything derail your focus on the campus,” he advised the students.
