Britain’s Prime Minister, Theresa May, in her first speech after losing majority at the parliamentary elections, has promised to ensure stability of the country.
Even though it got most seats, the Conservative Party led by Theresa May failed to secure 326 majority seats out of 650 parliament seats to enable it govern without the assistance of a minority party.
“As the results have shown, the Conservative Party has the highest number of seats and probably the highest number of votes. It is therefore incumbent on us to ensure stability and that is what we will do,” PM Theresa May said at a press conference early Friday.
The prime minister’s words come amidst calls for her to step down from her position, backed by Labour Party leader, Jeremy Corbyn whose party had the second highest number of seats from results so far declared.
Regardless of the courageous words by Mrs May, the results represent a devastating blow for May, who had called the election three years earlier than required by law, convinced by opinion polls that placed her far ahead of Corbyn.
The Conservative Party won 310 seats, losing 11 seats compared to the Labour Party which gained 28 seats and now has 258 seats according to results published by the BBC.
