Johnny Depp is sorry for his joke about assassinating Trump. The actor revealed this in new statement shared with People Magazine.
In case you missed what the drama was all about, the actor stirred major drama after he went on stage at Glastonbury Festival in Somerset, England, and made jokes aimed at President Trump that referenced assassination.
“Can we bring Trump here?” Depp asked the crowd at the festival. “I think he needs help. This is going to be in the press and it’ll be horrible. But I like that you’re all a part of it. When was the last time an actor assassinated a president?”
Many people did not find that joke funny and a lot more took to their social media, asking the Secret Service to investigate the actor. Their reason is pretty straightforward; Actor John Wilkes Booth famously assassinated President Abraham Lincoln in 1865.
But Johnny is not the first actor to joke about assassinating Trump.
Madonna talked about wanting to blow up the White House during her speech at the #Women’sMarch held in Washington in January. She later clarified, saying it was all talk because she isn’t a violent person.
And Johnny Depp is towing same line.
“I apologise for the bad joke I attempted last night in poor taste about President Trump,” the actor said yesterday. “It did not come out as intended, and I intended no malice. I was only trying to amuse, not to harm anyone.”
But what does the White House think of Depp’s joke?
“I hope that some of Mr Depp’s colleagues will speak out against this type of rhetoric as strongly as they would if his comments were directed to a Democratic elected official,” a White House statement on behalf of the president said.
But will this stop other actors from showing intense dislike for the president in the future?
